However, it’s important to understand that this online reporting option only applies to specific, minor accidents. Let’s break it down.
When You CAN Report an Accident Online
The eNaTIS online crash reporting system is designed for minor damage-only accidents – often referred to as “minor damage crashes.”
You can use the system if your incident meets all of these conditions:
- Minor Damage Only: Only minor damage – no major damage to vehicles or infrastructure.
- No Injuries or Fatalities: No one was hurt or killed in the accident.
- No Hit-and-Run: All drivers involved must be present and cooperative.
- Vehicle Limit: The accident involves four or fewer vehicles.
- Legal Submission: The online submission is legally binding, just like reporting at a police station.
If your accident qualifies, the eNaTIS portal allows you to:
- Complete and submit your crash report online.
- Receive an automatically generated Crash Report Number (CRN) – essential for your insurance claim.
- Download a PDF summary of your report.
- Get SMS and/or email confirmation once your report is submitted.
When You MUST Report the Accident in Person
While the online system is convenient, it’s not suitable for every situation.
According to the National Road Traffic Act (NRTA), you must report the crash in person at your nearest South African Police Service (SAPS) station or traffic department if:
- A person was killed or injured.
- The crash was a hit-and-run.
- The accident involved five or more vehicles.
In these cases, you must report the incident immediately and within 24 hours (or on the next working day if it happens after hours).
Why the Online Option Exists
The eNaTIS crash reporting portal was introduced to ease congestion at police stations and make it simpler for drivers to comply with reporting requirements for minor crashes. It’s a helpful alternative – but it doesn’t replace the legal obligation to report serious accidents properly.
